Chinese companies with virtually unlimited access to capital for the development of the next generation of connectivity are going head-to-head with US companies. Beyond economic competition, Beijing’s techno-authoritarianism travels too, and Beijing is working to export to sympathetic regimes the same combination of equipment and ideology it uses for monitoring and controlling its citizens at home.
Conflicts between China and other nations, including the United States, have been brewing for decades, centering around China’s unfair trade practices, subsidies, market barriers, and intellectual property theft. As high technology becomes increasingly important to the global economy, concern about the Chinese government’s practices in the world of technology also grows.
