Curator’s Note: I was reminded of George Eliot’s Middlemarch while reading this essay. The protagonist, Dorothea, seeks to be a ‘woman in love’ by being devoted to a man himself devoted to scholarship, and immersing herself in his scholarly devotion – to find (an ultimately futile) meaning in life.
