The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean, its littoral countries are home to almost half the world’s population. two-thirds of the world’s trade passes through the Indian Ocean, including most of its oil supplies. It is no surprise then that the Indian Ocean is fast emerging as the world’s most actively contested geopolitical theatre. In this presentation we are going to explore how this is happening, within the context of the emergence of a wider geopolitical theatre – the Indo-Pacific. In this presentation we look at the emergence if the idea of the Indo-Pacific, the emerging Quadrilateral Alliance of USA, Australia, Japan and India, interests and counter-interests of various key actors including as China and the ASEAN states.
